Portofino

Cesare Charter Portofino

Portofino is a small and ancient village that has remained unchanged over time. It looks like a nucleus of multicolored, tall and narrow houses, arranged along the bay near the famous "piazzetta" and surrounded by the luxuriant vegetation of Portofino Park.

Over the years, this village has become a famous holiday resort and an internationally renowned destination for politicians, celebrities from the entertainment industry, and VIPs in general.
This type of VIP tourism has led to some small changes within the village: renowned fashion boutiques began to appear where once small craft shops were and luxurious yachts started docking at the pier, replacing the ancient and modest fishing boats.

It is possible to take pleasant walks to discover the village directly from the central square. Stroll along the pier and through the tiny "caruggi", or head to the lighthouse, crossing the beautiful Church of San Giorgio and the Castello Brown fortification, which dominates Portofino from above.

You can reach Portofino by bus, boat, or on foot coming down from the Promontory. We do not recommend reaching Portofino by car, especially during the high season, due to the possibility of long queues and high parking rates.

Santa Margherita Ligure

Cesare Charter Portofino - Tour Two Gulfs, Santa Margherita Ligure

Santa Margherita Ligure is a prestigious town frequently visited by tourists from all over the world who find in its beaches, cafes, restaurants, art galleries, exclusive shops, and elegant hotels the perfect attractions for their holidays.

Santa Margherita offers suitable solutions to all types of travelers, both for those on the lookout for what's trending but also for those looking for genuine products and unspoiled nature. The ancient seafaring tradition is still present. Wandering around the port, you will find fishing boats docked next to many of the most beautiful recreational boats, demonstrating the importance of life at the sea.

The port is indeed a very characteristic place for its traditional fish market located nearby and for the crowd that gathers around the fishing boats to buy and cook some local delicacies.
Social gatherings, parties, folklore, and lots of sports activities such as sailing, rowing, and scuba diving take place in the area surrounding the port, livening up the town throughout the year.

Enjoy relaxing moments by the sea strolling along Ghiaia, the promenade (Lungomare), or to the enchanting Paraggi, a hamlet located between Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino. There, you will be amazed by the triumph of Mediterranean colours and scents which will embrace you as you enter the splendid cove hidden between green hills and a golden sandy beach.

San Fruttuoso

Cesare Charter Portofino - Tour Two Gulfs, San Fruttuoso

The splendid San Fruttuoso Bay is a pearl set between Portofino and Camogli, reachable only by hiking trails from the Monte di Portofino or by boat.
The homonymous medieval abbey is located at the centre of this small bay.

The original abbey complex was inhabited by the Benedictines. Later on, the abbey first became the home to local fishermen and then a pirates' hideout. It was then bought by the Doria family and the abbey experienced a long period of wealth which, however, was followed by a phase of decline, thus being used as a refuge for the poor. In 1983 the Doria Pamphili family donated the San Fruttuoso complex to FAI.

The place is mesmerizing. The small cove hosts a few fishermen's houses, the Torre dei Doria (a watchtower), and a small beach which gently slides into the crystal clear waters of the bay. You might also find a couple of restaurants where you can book an excellent lunch or dinner overlooking the sea.

The fame of San Fruttuoso Bay is due not only to the magical and spiritual atmosphere released by the abbey but also to the presence of the famous Christ of the Abyss.

Christ of the Abyss

Cesare Charter Portofino - Tour Two Gulfs, Chryst of the Abyss

The Christ of the Abyss is a bronze statue placed on the bottom of the bay of San Fruttuoso, between Camogli and Portofino. Following Duilio Marcante' idea, the original statue was placed in the sea in 1954, at approximately 17 metres (56 ft) depth, near the spot where Dario Gonzatti died during a dive in 1947.

The dive to observe the statue is one of the most famous excursions of the Ligurian coast.

Over the years, the Christ of the Abyss has become the symbol of the passion for diving and the sea of the entire Ligurian Riviera and beyond.
The dive is relatively simple and not very deep. It requires no special precautions other than the presence of diving companions registered with the Liguria Region, as it is located within the Portofino marine protected natural area.

Punta Chiappa

Cesare Charter Portofino - Tour Two Gulfs, Punta Chiappa

Punta Chiappa is a small sharp stretch of land that juts out into the sea from the promontory of Portofino on the west side.
It is part of the Municipality of Camogli, Portofino Natural Park, and the Marine Protected Area.

The upstream part is made up of the typical Mediterranean scrub with various microclimates that favour the vegetation of particular flora, as well as maritime and Aleppo pines.
The coast, on the other hand, is rocky as it is part of the conglomerate that overlooks a clear and deep-sea. It offers breathtaking views of the seabed rich in fish, such as sea bream, diplodus, gilthead bream, octopus, amberjack, and groupers. For this reason, this place is very coveted and frequented by numerous diving centers in the area.

The place attracts many admirers and passionate visitors, both in summer and in winter.
In summer, oleanders and bougainvilleas bloom all along the coastline, making this spot unique in terms of colours and scents that spread out in the air accompanied by the typical chirping of local cicadas.

Punta Chiappa can be reached on foot, hiking a stepped pedestrian street.
Along this marvellous and picturesque hiking trail, you might find several houses and villas inhabited especially in the summer and also some typical restaurants located in Porto Pidocchio area.

Rapallo

Cesare Charter Portofino - Tour Two Gulfs, Rapallo

Rapallo is one of the main tourist seaside resorts in the Riviera di Levante, located in the inner part of the Gulf of Tigullio.
Like the rest of the area, Rapallo guarantees a tourist offer based on a coast-hinterland combination.

The old town, partially renovated, is set between the sea and the railway station.
The modern part of the town extends as an arc around the bay and on the slopes of the hills behind, characterized by typical Mediterranean vegetation.

Important patronal feast not to be missed: Our Lady of Montallegro which takes place on July, 1-2-3 and San Sebastiano Fair held in the last week of January.

In addition to these two patronal feasts, Rapallo offers many other cultural and artistic initiatives as film reviews, concerts of various kinds and important literary prizes all year round.

Sestri Levante

Cesare Charter Portofino - Tour Two Gulfs, Sestri Levante

Due to its geographic conformation, it is locally defined as the "city of two seas", being the historic center of Sestri overlooking the two bays "Baia delle Favole" and "Baia del Silenzio" which extend respectively to the west and to the east.
The beauty of its landscape is due to the green luxuriant vegetation, the blue of the sea, and the golden sandy beaches.

The name "Baia delle Favole" – Fairytales Bay – was attributed to the great author of children's books Hans Christian Andersen, who visited these places and remained fascinated.
In his honor, Sestri Levante has hosted a Literary Prize dedicated to children every year since 1967. This initiative has allowed the city to claim the title of "City of children".

The main ingredient which strongly characterizes the cuisine of this is fish and in particular anchovy.
Following the best tradition of local fishermen, the Bagnun festival has been held every July for more than forty years in Riva Trigoso, a hamlet to the east of the city. Bagnun is a dish of anchovies, onions, garlic, parsley, tomato, and white wine.

Local Cuisine

Cesare Charter Portofino - Tour Two Gulfs, local cuisine

Ligurian cuisine consists of traditional dishes that make use of both local products – such as preboggion, a mixture of wild herbs – and ones imported from areas with which these lands have had frequent contact over the centuries, such as Sardinian pecorino which is one of the ingredients of pesto.

Due to its history, roots, and products, Ligurian cuisine is one of the best expressions of Mediterranean flavours.
It is a relatively poor cuisine made of simple, common and cheap dishes, but it has always been imitated and sought after thanks to its unique traditions and preparations.

The following is a list of the main product categories which best summarizes the great elements of our cuisine:

• spontaneous local wild herbs (marjoram, sage, rosemary, bay leaf, thyme, etc.) and products from locals' home garden (onions, potatoes, basil, aubergines, etc.)

• first fruits from crops and woods (basil, beefsteak tomatoes, trumpet courgettes, asparagus, Albenganese artichokes, mushrooms, truffles from Valbormida, fresh fruit, and dried fruit)

• olive oil

• farinaceous products (focaccia, farinata, savory pies, etc.)

• wide range of dry and fresh pasta

• sea fish (anchovies, shrimps, octopuses, baby octopus, cuttlefish, muscles, mullet, etc.) and game (given the high woodiness)

The combination and preparation of all these elements result in a simple, genuine, and varied cuisine renowned all over the world.

We hope you will stop by one of the restaurant to taste some pesto, pansotti with walnut sauce, the famous focaccia with cheese from Recco, the pasqualina cake, farinata, and other dishes based on local and traditional recipes.

Swimming and Snorkeling

Cesare Charter Portofino - Tour Two Gulfs, swim and snorkeling

Liguria has been strengthening its position for earning the largest number of Blue Flags for years.
The Blue Flag is an important recognition and award assigned to seaside tourist resorts for crystal clear waters and seaside services at their best.
In 2020, 32 Ligurian beaches and 14 landings were awarded the important and prestigious Blue Flag.

This recognizes the important role Liguria plays in the national tourist panorama, guaranteeing high-quality assurance both in the safeguard of the environment and in the services provided.

All of these aspects constitute the strong assets of our land, which must be appreciated, enjoyed, and safeguarded at the same time.

Our aim is to share the beauties of the most breathtaking and unspoiled corners of our coasts with our guests, allowing you to relax in one of the stops that you can make for a relaxing dip in clear waters or a short snorkeling excursion to discover the beauties of the underwater world.

Camogli

Cesare Charter Portofino - Tour Two Gulfs, Camogli

Camogli is a romantic Ligurian town by the sea characterized by a splendid promenade, an old harbor and a glorious past of a typical seafaring village.

Located inside the Gulf Paradiso, a few km from Genoa, it is characterized by a layered structure of the historic centre and by the ancient castle perched on the sea. These two famous features make Camogli a fascinating place rich in culture and ancient tradition.

The good location in which it is set makes the climate mild and pleasant throughout the year and between sea and mountains, monuments and history, culture and entertainment there is the possibility of beautiful routes and landscapes with unrivaled scenery.

Appreciated tourist and seaside resort, it is also connected to other important tourist towns such as Santa Margherita Ligure, Rapallo, Portofino and Paraggi and is a great starting point for excursions to the nearby Portofino Park.
